So I prepared a very detailed itinerary for not getting lost in the labyrinth of the city and discover the best angles!
In the end of the guide there are also a bit of recommended restaurants .. also reviewed on tripadvisor.
Happy reading and if you have questions ... go ahead!
HOW TO GET THERE
At the airport just in front of the exit gate of the city bus n5 make the ticket, you can buy single ride 1.30€. However buses arrive at Piazzale Roma (check position on google). Then you need either to walk to the hotel or take a bus boat.
Going to the island is also possible by Bus Boat. It is a bit more expensive, but the view is nice. See website http://www.alilaguna.it/en/tickets1/fares for more info (price about 15 euro single ticket).
You can buy a subscription to all transportations so you can get around easily even with the bus boats during all your stay. Visit http://www.actv.it/en website for info. Transportation is quite expensive in Venice.
FIRST DAY
The bus drops you at Piazzale Roma from where you can cross the bridge Calatrava (Modern Steel Bridge, famous) that overlooks the Grand Canal and walk along the road , it's called STRADA NOVA, straight following the road you will find on the left rail station and then just after the church of Saint
Lucia and the second bridge on the Grand Canal which is called the Ponte Degli Scalzi. Continuing on the road without crossing the bridge you arrive in Campo San Geremia where there is the church of Saint Lucia, inside there is also the body of the saint. Going still further , cross the bridge PONTE DELLE GUGLIE
which is above a secondary river called the Rio di Cannareggio (one of the six districts of Venice, Venice
is divided in six districts) . If you are interested, after crossing the bridge you turn left to walk a little and
then take the first or second street on the right. From there it enters the Jewish area (ghetto ebraico)...
it is quite famous, there are the synagogues which you can visit, or go straight on , along the street
(Strada Nova) where there are various stalls and street is quite wide. At some point after a crossing, the
street becomes narrower. You will cross a small bridge. Immediately after the right is the entrance to the casino. You could even think to go there to try your lucky!! It is very famous!
Going straight ahead again (along Strada Nova) overcome another bridge ... at some point there is a sort of square on the right overlooking the Grand Cana, that is called Santa Sofia.
You can go there and take for only 50 cents a pubblic gondola (shared with other people obviously) that will take you on the other side of the canal , it's a nice way to try to stay on a gondola spending very little. Private Tours on Gondola can cost around 70-80 euros for 40 min.
The gondola takes you to the Rialto Fish Market .. from there you can walk up to the rialto bridge .
General Advice: if you look carefully, many times on the walls of the buildings, especially at crossroads there are yellow signs with arrows and the name of the famous attractions like SAN MARCO, RIALTO, FERROVIA (train Station), PIAZZALE ROMA. You can follow them, not to get lost in the labyrinth.
I advise you to stay in this area . In Rialto area you can stay also for dinner ..
From the side of the market you can try:
1. Pronto Pesce in front of the loggia of the fish market of Rialto, adjacent to Campo Beccaria. Tel /
fax 041 8220298. you eat fish snacks.
2. Vecio Fritoin a good restaurant but a bit expensive (for Italian standard, not Norwegian one)
3. Nono Risorto is really a place where tourists do not go there ! typical Venetian
On the opposite side of the Rialto bridge you arrive in Campo San Bartolomeo. If you arrive for dinner you can stay there (in a small alley ), going to Osteria La Botte. It is a small inn or go to a special place ( I strongly suggest to go there) where you can have dinner, but you can if arrive early (before 19) you
can go just to take a drink and usually they offer their pasta or rice and other snacks.
The place is called Campiello del Remer , a little expensive for Italian standard but really nice.
As Aperitif, try always the SPRITZ. It has been invented in Venice, now it is famous all around Europe!
To arrive to CAMPIELLO DEL REMER: From Campo San Bartolemeo with the rialto bridge behind , go left,
in front you will see a store called Coin (famous) there .. keep walking along the narrow road. Pass the
church which is on the right and on the left below is a restaurant called tuscany wine shop / restaurant .
Soon after there is a small alley on the left, you take it and brings you to this place .
Otherwise, there is a restaurant where you can eat well even if it is indoor and the place is not so special but food is very good. To arrive there do not turn into the alley of CAMPIELLO REMER, you arrive in a big square where there is a bell tower. It's called Campo Santi Apostoli . There, taking the road on the right you will find Da Bepi ( you have to book).
SECOND DAY
If you want to visit Murano and Burano islands, it is recommend going there in the morning arriving at Piazzale Roma take the Direct Murano ( at minutes 20 and 50) and arrive in Murano.
Burano is much prettier between the two islands ! However Murano is very famous for the glass all around the world.
Suggestion: for pubblic boats it may be suggested to do daily passes or weekend passes (if still available). Single trips on boats are quite expensive for not residents.
You can take the vaporetto from Burano LN arrives at FONDAMENTA NOVE and from there you can walk to the center , but there is long way to go , I advise you to take another ferry line 42 and get off area Giardini and walk along the Riva degli Schiavoni ( road long enough ) to Piazza San Marco , or you can stop from line 42 to St. Marco's Square directly in the area at San Zaccaria .
Otherwise take the LN to Burano and Murano off from there take the first one that goes to San Zaccaria , perhaps it is the shortest route.
At San Zaccaria ... Cross the bridge of sighs and arrived in the square. Enjoy San Marco Square. It is amazing!
You can visit the Basilica is open from 9:45 to 17:00 - Sunday and public holidays: 14:00 to 17:00 (free entrance ) and the bell tower is open from 9:00 to 19:00 (admission : 8 €) .
Also visit (if you have time) the Ducal Palace (PALAZZO DUCALE), which, however, requires a bit more time .
It can be cute too , if not crowded, to take vaporetto number 1 which takes about 1 hour and do all the stops of the canal to come back to PIAZZALE ROMA or FERROVIA (Train Station).
For dinner, I recommend you not to eat in the area san marco , eat badly and pay much.
A nice restaurant that I know is on the FONDAMENTA DELLE ZATTERE is called LA PISCINA. To go there you can take the bus boat directly from San Marco (should be 52) and get off at ZATTERE (opposite is the island of the Giudecca).
THIRD DAY
Departure from Piazzale Roma : stay on the right side of the square ( the side opposite to the bridge Calatrava) there is a quite large channel and run along it, at the end of the channel past the iron bridge and continue to follow the street. You will see on the right University of Venice .. always follow the road
and you arrive in a very large field which is called Campo Santa Margherita.
From where you came out, go to the right, keeping the left side of the road , go to the end of the square where there are bars and clubs with tables outside and leave at your right a stone building that is at the center of the square. Follow the road to the left, then right and you find a canal , cross the bridge and then go to the church with the bell tower of San Barnaba (there should be always an exhibition of Leonardo Da Vinci in the church )
It seems difficult in reality most people do this way so just follow the crowd (or the signs towards Rialto or San Marco)!
Arrived at San Barnaba pass the “sottoportego” follow the road , you will cross two bridges. The second is a stone bridge. After that go to the right and you'll find a place called AL Bottegon (Cantinone Gia Schiavi) (VERY SUGGESTED AT LUNCH, Go early) that is typical of the Venetian “Cicchetti” (slices of bread with several sauces and very particular tastes. You have to taste .. creamed cod (Baccalà mantecato) and sardines in sauce (Sarde in Saor). The lady there won several awards.
From here you can go back in the direction of the canal and cross the bridge PONTE DELL’ACCADEMIA (Fourth Bridge on Grand Canal) where there is a beautiful landscape, you can see the church CHIESA DELLA SALUTE.
After the bridge, you're not far from Piazza San Marco. You arrive in a large field is called Campo Santo Stefano (possibly there is good food at a place called BECCAFICO) .
From the square going into the alley that lies between a bar and a pharmacy , go straight and you'll find yourself in an elegant shopping street (CALLE 22 MARZO) and in front of a church very decorated ( San Moise ) . Continuing on that road you find yourself in Piazza San Marco.
If you like the other thing I recommend you visit the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. It is expected to cost about 10 euro and it is modern art. It is located near the church LA SALUTE and is within walking distance from the bridge PONTE DELL’ACCADEMIA.
I do not recommend other museums in so short time.. worth going in the churches that you will find (at least just to have a quick view) because they are many and all very beautiful , or visit the ducal palace (PALAZZO DUCALE).
To return , you can take the vaporetto , maybe go up to San Marco and the Rialto Bridge which is not far away and start from there.
